A few years ago I published a limited edition hard cover of The Nelson George Mixtape, a collection of music pieces that were largely out of print and some pieces that had never been published. Followed that up with a paperback release. Both were very successful. It was only after those “experiments” that the opportunity to do this Substack opened up. So it was that book that led me to this platform.
With hip hop’s 50th anniversary imminent it felt like a great moment to collect many of my articles on rap music. My original collection, BUPPIES, BBOYS, BAPS AND BOHOS: NOTES ON POST-SOUL BLACK CULTURE (1992), has most of my best work from the Village Voice, but trade coverage for Billboard was missing and, of course, none of the articles I’ve written in last twenty years are there. So I’ve put together a small zine like publication that contains content from a wide range of periodicals, including the Amsterdam News, Billboard, Spin, the Soho Weekly News and other pubs. Plus there are some back in the day posters (from the movie CB4, Public Enemy) and pix, including the cover shot taken in London in the ‘80s and another period pix of me from late night at a NYC hip hop club.
If hip hop is 50 years old, then I’ve been covering it and engaging with it for 45 of those years, which probably makes me the person who’ve been reporting on it the longest. To say “I didn’t think hip hop would make it this far” is an understatement. But here we are. The link above takes you to the Pacific Pacific website where Volume 2 is available for $18. Books should be shipping around August 11th, hip hop’s born day.
By the way, if you purchase Volume 2, you’ll receive a 20% discount on Volume 1. The discount is applied at check out.
