Questlove on D'Angelo's 'Voodoo'
Yesterday was the 23rd anniversary of the singer's second album
I am a day late with this interview, but I had a hard time finding it on YouTube, which it wasn’t listed on my Legacy playlist where I’ve been posting my archical videos. This was conversation was held at New York University’s Clive Davis Institure around the time the album had been re-issued on vinyl. You can see Quest autographed my copy. This is a very heartfelt appreciation of an album that the Roots’ drummer was a key creative collaborator in recording D’Angelo’s second album, a record that had a mixed reception back in 2000, but has become much more respected with time. Somewhere there are live recordings of the band that toured behind this album, with Amir on drums. Hopefully they’ll surface some day.
