MY RESPONSE TO JANN WENNER
The Rolling Stone founder gave an interview that insulted women and black artists
Jann Wenner, founder of Rolling Stone, is publishing a book called ‘The Masters,’ which features in interviews with seven rock stars (Bono, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, John Lennon, Bruce Springteen, Pete Townsend.) Fine. But when interviewed by the New York Times about why there were no black or female “masters” he said he a few crazy things: “Insofar as the women, just none of them were as articulate enough on this intellectual level.” “Of black artsists - you know Stevie Wonder, genius right? I suppose when you use a word as broad as ‘masters,’ the fault is using that word. Maybe Marvin Gaye or Curtis Mayfield? I mean, they just didn’t artiulate at that level.”
If you’re a NY Times subscriber you can find the interview, but its being quoted in many news outlets. I posted a video in response that points to the how Wenner’s views helped define what was once the world’s number one music publication.
So this is pretty freaky - I posted this set of thoughts on white male ego and The Rock Canon on Twitter just hours before the Wenner interview dropped.... must have been something buzzing in the ether... https://twitter.com/joemuggs/status/1702428656436691358
Every single one of these “masters” got their degrees in rock and roll from Black musicians - Sister Rosetta, Chuck, Little Richard. Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney got their literal break from Little Richard. I’m happy that there is a real consequence to Wenner’s words. As a queer, female music journalist, this comes as no surprise. My entire Substack is dedicated to the stories that so many straight, white, male writers erase from history.
