MY NOVEL AND THE DIDDY TRIAL
Night Work, a 2003 novel about a black male escort, has taken on new relevance
In the early '00s I met a white woman at a club, who turned out to be into the world of underground sex clubs and was something of a madam to a loose group of male escorts. There was a whole world of brothers who were having sex with mostly white women, often with cuckold husbands/partners in the room. There are many such videos in porn, but I always thought they were just badly executed acting job and not real. But this videos are just a window into a very sexually active world. I was a fan of the movie American Gigolo so I wrote a noir novel, Night Work, about a black male escort named Night. The novel did only so so and I'd sought of forgot about it as a failed experiment. Well I've been listening to the escorts who've been speaking on social media post-Diddy trial and its like my novel come to life. A lot of the details (people wearing masks, how these men were recruited) lined up with what I wrote back in 2003. This particular business hasn’t been changed by the internet. There's also a strong music thread as Night got into this game when his career as an R&B singer hadn't taken off. There's sex, murder and the threat of incarceration in the plot in a book that's suddenly relevant as a journey into how black men are viewed as sex objects by themselves and others.
