Back in 2015 I directed a documentary on the ballerina Misty Copeland focused on her recovery from a career threatening injury and his rise to being a principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater. We stayed in touch and a couple of years later I watched her perform in La Bayadere in Los Angeles and was stuck by her acting, as much as her dancing prowess. We came up with an idea for a non dialog dance film. With the aid of former dancer Leyla Fayyaz, who is now Misty’s partner in the production conpany, Life in Motion, that notion developed into a short film focused on homelessness in Oakland. It’s an extraordinary project that has faced all kinds of obstacles, including COVID-19, but its done and should be ready for festivals in 2023. Check out the trailer and more detailed description in the link for a project that was very much a labor of love.
