One of the great honors of my life was to direct a documentary on baseball’s greatest player — Willie Mays, number 24 of the New York Giants, San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets. The oldest living Hall of Fame player is still iconic on both coasts and will celebrated this summer when the Giants and Cardinals play a game at Rickwood Field where, in 1948, teenager Mays played the outfield for the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues. You can catch ‘Say Hey, Willie Mays’ on MAX or on HBO, and enjoy the exploits, excitement and humor of a man who’s career was shaped by civil rights, television, and his understanding of the national pastime. A nice bonus are a bounty of classic songs used as music cues by Muddy Waters, Duke Ellington, and Junior Walker, plus an original closing credits track by Chuck D.
