How 'City Kid' led to 'Brooklyn Boheme'
Excerpts from my book City Kid describe my introduction to an African-American creative community
Twenty-eight years ago if you’d have told me that I’d live in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene hood where I’d experience some of my most important creative and life experiences, there’s no way I would have believed you. Even in the tough NYC of the ‘80s, Fort Greene was a place you didn’t venture into. Yet I’d move there in 1985 and have my life changed in the most profound and positive ways. Before I made the documentary, Brooklyn Boheme, about the people I met and collaborated with in Fort Greene, I wrote about the area in the book City Kid. Below are a few pages from that 2009 book, which would inspire me to shoot Brooklyn Boheme.

The full book, City Kid: A Writer’s Memoir of Ghetto Life and Post-Soul Success, is available at all on line bookstores.
