Funk, the link between ‘60s soul and ‘80s hip hop, never has gotten the represent it deserves. There’s a number of reasons for that and most of them are discussed in the documentary I directed Finding the Funk. The original edit of the piece aired on VH1. After the contract ended, so did some of the music licensing agreements, so what I call the “storytellers” edit is what’s up on line. One day I hope to revisit this project and use more of the material I couldn’t squeeze in. Bootsy, Sly, George Clinton, Shelia E, Mtume and so many other giants weigh in on this vital strain of black musical invention.
