The year 1978 was a crucial one for me as a young journalist. I was an intern at both the black weekly the Amsterdam News and the record business trade publication Billboard, while attending St. John’s University. I was twenty that spring looking forward to turning twenty-one in the fall. A lot happened to me as youngsters roaming New York’s streets and this story is one of the most important events. This same story is related with more context in my book ‘Hip Hop America.’ Happy black history month. Enjoy this before its illegal!
