Dawn Silva is one of the through lines of funk’s creation and vitality. She sang background with Sly and the Family Stone before being recruited by George Clinton to join the Parliament-Funkadelic family in 1977, where she was an original member of the Brides of Funkenstein along with Lynn Mabry and sang on Brides’s LPs as well as was part of the crazy P-Funk live experience. Later she sang with the Gap Band during their run of early ‘80s hits. Her first solo album, ‘All My Funky Friends,’ wasn’t released until 2000 on a European label.
This is a very brief outline of Dawn’s dynamic career. In this interview Dawn gives the wild and often details of life with Sly, P-Funk and so much more. The female story of funk is under reported. Dawn has all the details.
