BOBI WINE: THE PEOPLE'S PRESIDENT
A few words from the subject of the Oscar nominated documentary
Went to a screening ‘Bobi Wine: The People’s President’ last night. Thought we’d only be hearing from the directors Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp afterwards, but the musician turned politician was in the house and actually conducted the Q&A with his collaborators. The film is about Wine’s epic struggle to democratically oust Uganda’s corrupt leader Yoweri Museveni, a rebel turned dictator. The story chronicles the decade long transformation of Wine from popular performer to Presidential candidate. There’s graphic violence and murder in the film perpetrated by the Ugandan government. Still, Bobi and his supporters haven’t lost their faith in democracy or the future. There are many lessons in the film for Americans in this sad political era. The Oscar nominated film is on mutiple streaming platforms and definitely worth your time.
I thought Bobi’s ending thoughts on democracy, the United States role in propping up the Museveni regime, and on the energy of young people globally was worth sharing.
